The Administration

In 1980 the Swedish parliament decided to establish a special board of Sami schools, where the Sami people would be in majority. The board functions as an authority for the Sami schools and as such it is responsible of leading them.

The Sami education board is also responsible, through propositions; to assist in developing text books and teaching aids about Sami people for education in the Swedish comprehensive school system.

The office of the Sami education board is situated in Jokkmokk and is lead by a school director, who is appointed by the Sami parliament in agreement with the Sami education board.

The school director’s main task is to develop the education. He or she also assists the Sami education board in leading the different Sami schools. From January 1996 every school unit is lead by a principal who also is the pedagogical leader and director for his or her staff.

He or she has an overall responsibility for the activities at their schools respectively. The director of the Sami education board creates together with the principals a leading group. The administrative staff in Jokkmokk is responsible for the work at central and administrative levels.

At the central office in Jokkmokk an educational adviser and a teaching adviser are employed. The former deals with pedagogical issues and the latter is responsible for the development and production of text books and teaching aids for Sami education.
