Sameskolstyrelsen (SamS)

In the Swedish School Law it is said that Sami children can complete their obligatory school attendance in a Sami school instead of in a Swedish compulsory school.

The Sami schools are equivalent to the compulsory schools and include school years 1-6.The education is shaped and profiled in accordance with Sami people’s needs of an education that protects and develops Sami language and culture.

The goals of Sami school education are stated in the curriculum. The Sami school is responsible that every pupil after graduating:

• is familiar with his or her Sami background and cultural heritage

• can speak, read and write in Sami

In addition to this the regular goals of the compulsory school system apply.
According to the Sami School Decree all education should be given in Sami and Swedish. The subject Sami is obligatory in every grade.

The Swedish Government has determined what is the least amount of teaching hours that should be offered to pupils in years 1-6.

The course syllibi which are set for the compulsory schools also apply in the Sami schools. The Swedish National Agency for Education has decided on a course syllibus in the Sami language. The goals differ depending on whether the pupil has Sami as his or her first or second language. The syllibus is translated into North, Julev and South Sami. The education at the Sami schools is given in these three dialects.
